Search & Rescue

Superstition Search & Rescue is a volunteer service organization affiliated with the Pinal County Sheriff's Office in Florence, Arizona. This non-profit rescue team was originally formed in 1985 as Apache Junction Search and Rescue. In 1994, we incorporated and changed our name to Superstition Wilderness Rescue, Inc. and later changed the name again to Superstition Search & Rescue.

The primary purpose of this volunteer organization is to assist individuals who may experience wilderness-related problems. These range from incidents such as falls or other injuries, lost or overdue hikers, heat or cold exposure, and more. Our group is highly skilled in wilderness first-aid, technical rescue, orienteering and tracking. These skills enable Superstition Search & Rescue members to safely and efficiently move patients from the field to appropriate medical service in the event of injury, or to their families, in the case of a lost or overdue hiker. We currently have approximately 25 volunteers and are always looking for more people.

Membership:

Joining Superstition Search and Rescue can be very rewarding, but it also requires a large commitment. In addition to requiring ownership of various technical gear, group membership also requires significant time - you may be called on a rescue that may last days. We realize that not all members can just take time off whenever there is a callout, but many members will work extra shifts to make up time at work or even use vacation days for searches. You will need to coordinate with your employer about your involvement with the rescue group.

Membership dues are $40 annually, and an application and background check are required. New members will undergo a 90-day probationary period while they obtain preliminary training, and acquire appropriate gear. While this is a volunteer organization, attendance and participation in training events and searches are very important.
